n a double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of 77 peri-menopausal women, black cohosh and St. John's wort significantly reduced menopausal symptoms by 76%. The primary menopausal symptom was hot flushes which were rated separately. The trial reported a significant drop in the hot flush score from 7.5 at baseline to 1.5 by twelve weeks. The other symptoms relieved included night sweats, disturbed sleep, headaches and irritability.
