The predominant microbial species in the urogenital tract is Lactobacilli, causing an acidic environment (lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide release, a pH of 3.0 – 4.5), which is unfavourable to pathogenic organisms. Disruption to this innate ‘ecosystem’ may result in an increased risk of urinary tract infections, cystitis, bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Clinical research of oral probiotic treatment with GR-1™ and RC-14™ shows adherence to the vaginal epithelium with improvement to the composition of vaginal microbiota. A greater concentration of Lactobacilli was observed, compared to placebo (p<0.01). Another randomised, double blind, clinical study observed that 54% of women with a history of yeast vaginitis developed no symptoms in 28 days after taking GR-1™ and RC-14™ daily.5 Probiotic treatment was shown to restore balance within the vaginal microbiome in 61% of the treatment group compared to 26% of the placebo group.
